Central Institute of Psychiatry ran one of the earliest rural mental health clinics when such a clinic was started at Mandar near Ranchi in 1967. Since then, the Institute has been instrumental in rendering mental health services in the community. The Institute runs community Extension Clinics at Ghatotand, West Bokaro, Hazaribagh and Chandankiyari, Bokaro.

West Bokaro Extension Clinic

The General Psychiatry Clinic at West Bokaro was started in 1980s. Every month on a fourth Tuesday, a team from Central Institute of Psychiatry visits the extension clinic. The team consists of a consultant psychiatrist, a senior resident, a junior resident and a clinical psychologist. The population from a radius of around 40 km in and around West Bokaro visit the clinic for consultation. Consultation is sought for various neuropsychiatric disorders and treatment is advised on outpatient basis. The patients in need of detailed evaluation are referred to the Institute. The clinical psychologist of the team visits the Holy Cross School, West Bokaro where various mental health concerns of the students are addressed. The team has also been conducting regular camps, awareness programs and workshops with teachers and parents to sensitize and raise awareness.
 

Chandankiari Extension Clinic

Jan Chetna Manch, Bokaro has been running the community health program at Chamrabad, Chandankiari. The component of mental health care was subsequently added in partnership with Central Institute of Psychiatry, Ranchi in June 2014. The extension clinic was set up within the health center and a team of 4- 5 mental health professionals have been visiting the clinic every month on a second Wednesday since then. The clinic caters to patients from many villages in Chandankiari and Chas and provides treatment for various neuropsychiatric disorders including epilepsy. The team has also been conducting periodic awareness programs for the patients as well as the community health workers.
