The Centre for Addiction Psychiatry
in CIP was started on 09 July
1999. It is a new
and modern De-addiction
Center with a capacity of
30 in patient beds for managing persons suffering from alcohol & drug
dependence. It is also the nodal Center for Eastern India
for manpower training and research in the field of alcohol and drug abuse.
Catchments area: The De-addiction Centre, CIP,
caters to the patients seeking treatment for substance dependence, from
different parts of Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal,
UP, MP and Chattisgarh. Referrals are received from faraway states of the
country specially the Nth - Eastern states too.
Clinical Services: The clinical services consist of inpatient and
outpatient consultations for substance dependent (alcohol and drug dependence)
with approximately 800 new consultations per year for the management for
substance dependence.
Treatment approaches involve comprehensive
biopsychosocial approaches of assessment and treatment. The committed team of
deaddiction center includes psychiatrists, residents, clinical psychologists,
psychiatric social workers and psychiatric nurses.
Inpatient treatment includes assessment &
detoxification using most modern methods of pharmacological treatment,
Comprehensive psychosocial and ecological assessment is done by trained
clinical psychologist and psychiatric social workers. All patients undergo
detailed physical evaluation including detailed use of laboratory parameters,
including screening for HIV using ELISA for HIV I and II. Individual attention
is given to every patient regarding motivation enhancement and relapse
prevention therapy. Group meetings and group psychotherapy is also provided to
patients.
Pharmacological interventions include comprehensive,
individualized regime using appropriate anticraving treatment protocols.
Inpatient Services: The centre offers a comprehensive treatment programme which
includes components of motivation enhancement, relapse prevention, group
therapy and family intervention and other psychological interventions including
relapse management and follow up, group
meeting, supervision and facilitation of AA meeting, awareness program by
lectures, slides and video shows, Psychoeducation to patients and guardians. Neuropsychological
assessment and vocational rehabilitation facilities are also offered.
The inpatient services provided
for substance dependent (alcohol and drug dependence) at this center includes
above 400 admissions per year for inpatient management for substance
dependence.
The
30 beds are however inadequate to meet
the demand and the average daily bed occupancy is over 30, with the unit being
forced to place patients in beds belonging to the psychiatry inpatient
facility. As a result, an additional building is under construction to meet
with this requirement. There is further need of a separate wing for the
in-patient treatment facility specifically catering to women and children.
Outpatient and Emergency Services: Emergency and Out patient
services includes outpatient management of substance dependence detoxification,
counseling and follow up. Complications like delirium or seizure are admitted
in the emergency 24 hours, and later admitted as inpatients in the wards.
Outreach services: Providing aftercare and more accessible
services closer to the community has been one of the major efforts of the
Centre for Addiction Psychiatry with a focus on developing community responses.
Community Outreach
Program were conducted by Deaddiction Centre, CIP, between 2000 to 2002 in collaboration with RIHAA, an NGO doing community
work at Holy cross Hospital Mandar, 25 kms from Ranchi. The team from CIP
included Consultant, SR, JR, Clinical Psychologist and Psychiatric Social
Worker, visited Mandar block once
every month providing services to
approximately 1500 patients in the community with average of 60 patients every
month. The centre also provided awareness programme once every year at YMCA
since its inception.
Training and Dissemination of Information:
In addition to
the strong emphasis on service delivery Centre for Addiction Psychiatry has
also been involved in training medical and non medical professionals within the
ambit of the professional courses at CIP, like psychiatry residents, clinical
psychologist, psychiatric social work and psychiatric nurses in various aspects
of substance dependence. The Centre for Addiction Psychiatry has also provided
training to several visiting nursing students from Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal, UP, MP and Chattisgarh.
