Aims & Objective
The primary mission of the Medical Library is to provide the
information services and access to bibliographic and full text digital and
printed resources in the field of Mental Health and Allied Sciences to the
scholarly and informational needs of the institute community. It also support
the educational and research programme of the institute by providing physical
and intellectual access to information, consistent with the present and anticipated educational and
research programmes of the institute. In accordance with the objectives of the
institute, library provides a wide range of current, accurate and authoritative
information from a vast selection of print and electronic resources using
state-of-the-art technology.
Collection
The library collection focuses primarily on Psychiatry,
Psychology, Neurosciences, Psychiatric Social Work and Psychiatric Nursing. The
collection of the library which includes books, journals, VHS, VCDs, Reports,
Dissertation, Thesis, WHO publication, Microfilms and e–journals is regarded
one of the richest collection in the country. It has some rarest collection of
reference materials dating back from 1910 and onwards. It maintains
approximately 35000 books, 15000 bound volumes of journals and WHO publication.
The annual budget of the library is over 2.5 crores. The library currently
subscribes 306 print journals and has access of almost 2000 e-journals by using
different platform such as Science Direct, OvidSP, Blackwell-Synergy, Informaworld,
Springerlink etc. Library is also a member of the ERMED- India consortia which
is run by National Medical Library, New
Delhi. ERMED provides full text access of almost 1500
journals on its platform. It is no exaggeration to state that the CIP library
is the largest and finest of its kind in the country.
The
library offers services such as Borrowing of library materials, References
Services, Xeroxing, Users Guiding Services, Digital Circulation, Display of New
Arrivals, Document Delivery Service, Current Awareness Service etc. Library has
On-line and Off-line literature search facility also. Library is well connected
with LAN of the institute and has 128 Kbps Leased Line and 2Mbps Broad Band
Internet connectivity.
The
library has been using the LIBSYS and Integrated Library Management software
package with all the modules of library housekeeping operations. All the
holdings of the library have been digitised and users can search the library
database by using LibSys OPAC online.
Library
is currently running in Technical Block of the institute. A three storied new
building will be ready by the end of the year 2009. The new building will be
equipped with latest electronic surveillance systems and the state-of-the art
automatic circulation system
Library
is currently being opened from 10.00
am to 8.00 pm
without any break except on every 2nd Saturday of the month, Sunday and all
Gazetted holidays. Currently library has 6 staffs comprising of 2 library
professionals (i.e. Sr. Librarian and Librarian), 2 Nursing staffs, a Peon and
a Safaiwala each. Any one can contact the library for any type of information
