Centre for Addiction Psychiatry

The S.S. Raju Centre for Addiction Psychiatry caters to the patients seeking treatment for substance dependence, from different parts of the country. Majority of the patients visiting the centre belong to the state of Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh (UP), Madhya Pradesh (MP) and Chhattisgarh. Referrals are also received from faraway states of the country even, the North - Eastern states. It is a modern 60 bedded Deaddiction Centre providing treatment facilities to persons suffering from substance use disorders most common of which are alcohol, cannabis, heroin and other drug dependencies.

Centre for Addiction Psychiatry is involved in training medical and non-medical professionals in the ambit of the professional courses at CIP, like postgraduate psychiatry residents, clinical psychologists, psychiatric social workers and psychiatric nurses in various aspects of substance dependence. The centre is also involved in the training of several visiting nursing students from Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal, UP, MP and Chhattisgarh. Currently, the Centre for Addiction Psychiatry is one the Regional Technical Agencies for the ongoing National Survey for extent and pattern of substance use in India being implemented by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. It has been a nodal centre for capacity building & human resource development in the field of addiction psychiatry.

Since its inception, the S. S. Raju Centre for Addiction Psychiatry has been a modern centre providing both pharmacological and psychosocial interventions to those seeking treatment. The foundation stone for the Deaddiction Block was laid by Late. Prof S. S. Raju, then Director & Medical Superintendent on 26th January 1998. It was inaugurated on 9th July, 1999 as S S Raju Centre for Addiction Psychiatry by Dr O. N. Krishna, ADGHS. It started as a modest 30 bed unit which later was upgraded to a 60 bed unit in January 2011.
 

Current Working Milieu

Centre for Addiction psychiatry provides a healthy and independent working environment. The centre has well qualified multi-disciplinary faculty and staff to render various modalities of care. At present, the departmental faculty include one Director Professor, three Assistant Professors of Psychiatry as well two Senior Residents. There is also one Assistant Professor of Psychology, and Assistant Professor of Psychiatric Social Work in the department. Other than this there are postgraduate psychiatry trainees posted in the department during their rotation along with MPhil Clinical Psychology students, MPhil Psychiatric Social work students. The nursing staff comprises an Assistant Nursing Superintendent, an in-charge (senior nursing officer) and ten junior nursing officers. Other staff members include six ward attendants, one store In-charge and a mali (gardener).

Facilities at The Department

CLINICAL SERVICES:

The clinical services consist of inpatient and outpatient consultations for substance dependence. Treatment approaches involve comprehensive biopsychosocial approaches for assessment and treatment. The committed team at the Deaddiction Centre includes psychiatrists, psychiatry residents, clinical psychologists, psychiatric social workers and psychiatric nurses.

Out Patient Services & Emergency Services

Out-patient and Emergency services include weekly substance use disorder clinic which is run every Saturday (except gazetted holidays). This includes detailed workup of patients visiting the outpatient department of CIP. After detailed workup, patients are assessed for any psychosocial and family factors and accordingly those patients requiring treatment on an outpatient basis are provided with detoxification, psychotherapeutic interventions and follow up services. The centre also provides emergency services round the clock 24 hours every day to patients who attend the emergency services.

Inpatient services

Inpatient services comprise of comprehensive management program which includes detailed assessment and individualized treatment of patients by a dedicated team of professionals including consultant and psychiatry residents, clinical psychologists, psychiatric social workers and psychiatric nurses. All patients admitted at the centre undergo detailed physical evaluation, haematological and biochemical investigations, radiological investigations such as CT scan, X-ray, USG and screening for HIV using ELISA for HIV I and II whenever indicated. They are also assessed for various psychosocial factors including diagnostic psychometry, personality assessment, cognitive assessment, and family structure and dynamics etc. Patients are initially detoxified for withdrawal symptoms and thereafter short-term and long-term treatments are offered comprising of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions for the management of substance dependence. Pharmacological interventions include anti-craving medications, oral substitution therapies, deterrent therapy etc. Non- pharmacological therapies include motivational enhancement therapy (MET), relapse prevention therapy (RPT), family therapy, marital therapy, assertive skill and coping skill management, and also yoga and meditation. We also offer management of comorbid conditions like personality disorders, mood and anxiety disorders which are often associated with various addictions. Various information, education and communication (IEC) activities including group meeting, awareness program by lectures, slides and video shows and psychoeducation are carried out for caregivers and guardians of inpatients.

Recreational Activities

A range of recreational activities are available for the patients admitted at the centre which includes activities like yoga, gym, carom, board games, badminton, table-tennis, music, television, movie screening (once a week on Saturdays) and library facilities (magazines, newspapers, fiction and non-fiction books).

Rehabilitation services

This includes facility for vocational rehabilitation at the Occupational Therapy Centre in the Institute.
