The Institute has been instrumental in introducing different therapeutic and rehabilitative services in India. Psychiatric rehabilitation, also known as psychosocial rehabilitation, is the process of restoration of community functioning and well-being of an individual who has a psychiatric disability. Rehabilitation work undertaken by psychiatrists, social workers, psychologists and occupational therapists seeks to effect changes in a person's environment and in a person's ability to deal with his/her environment, so as to facilitate improvement in symptoms or personal distress.

One of the oldest X-ray machines in the city was installed at the Institute. A radiology department with facility for sophisticated cerebral angiography, pneumoencephalography, air ventriculography, myelography etc. was established in 1954. The Centre for Neuroimaging and Radiological Sciences at the Central Institute of Psychiatry caters to the various imaging requirements of neuropsychiatry patients referred from the outpatient department as well as in patients.

Department of Psychiatric Nursing - About

When the institute was established in 1918, the nursing staff consisted of seven European male attendants and five European nurses, including a matron. Mrs. Aleyamma Brocklesby Davis (Eapen) was the first Indian nurse to be sent to Maudsley hospital in London for special training in psychiatric nursing. She was appointed as matron of European Mental hospital, Kanke, Ranchi following her return from London. The Department of Psychiatric Nursing was established and the course for psychiatric nursing started from 1stAugust 1983 under Ranchi University. Mr. M. N.

Department of Clinical Psychology - About

The Department of Clinical Psychology is an independent department at Central Institute of Psychiatry. The department works in the area of patient care, teaching, research, resource development and community service. The department was envisioned in the year 1922 when a separate block for psychological assessment and management was constructed in the hospital. It is the oldest independent Department of Clinical Psychology in India. The Department of Clinical Psychology officially started in 1949 and it happens to have the first Clinical Psychology laboratory in the country.

Majority of the patients visiting the centre belong to the state of Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
